Boisean helps raise $20 million for charity in 2007
BOISE, ID - This past weekend was the culmination of a year that brought many non-profit organizations new hopes for the dreams they share and a new benchmark for local charity auctioneer Larry Flynn.
Flynn returned this week from Seattle, WA as the new auctioneer for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center′s “Hutch Holiday Gala” held annually for the past 31 years. Saturday night′s event raised over 5 million dollars for cancer research at this world-class, leading cancer research institution. That event found Flynn helping raise over twenty million dollars for charity this year.
An active individual with a passion for fundraising, Flynn transplanted to Boise in 2003 from the Sun Valley area, mostly for convenience of the airport. “Having two small children helped make the decision easier”, Flynn says. “We knew we could build on our dreams. We made the move to Boise so that I could have the ability to travel to these events and still be close to the places and people we love!”
Flynn′s events and travels have included NYC and Vail, CO for the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, The Mayo Clinic as well as the Hospice of the Valley in Arizona, The Rita Hayworth Gala for Alzheimers Research held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, Richmond, VA and New Orleans, LA for historical homes and gardens, Anchorage, AK and Hailey, ID for equestrian centers for the handicapped, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Napa, Sonoma CA, New York as well as WA wine country for events that support everything from medical research to the arts to public and private schools to children′s charities and sports organizations.
The start of this unusual career began in 1986 in Sun Valley, ID when Flynn helped with grass-roots fundraising for folks that had a personal tragedy such as an accident that required medical help, or, a fire that destroyed someone′s home and insurance (if any) didn′t come close to paying the expenses. As a radio personality there, Flynn had the ability to reach out to the community and ask for their help. Those pleas for help grew to more and more organizations wanting to raise money for their causes. The Sun Valley community now has Flynn covering most of the major (and some of the minor) events in that resort town.
Flynn recalls a local effort of fundraising for his own recovery from a life-threatening lung ailment in 1990. “That′s when I really wanted to start giving back and discovered this is what I′m supposed to be doing and it′s what I love to do”, Flynn says.
Flynn is the Past President of the Hailey Chamber of Commerce and Past President of the Ketchum/Sun Valley Rotary Club. Flynn also participates with the fundraising efforts of The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Idaho, which Flynn is a member of the Board of Directors.
Locally in Boise, Flynn has already been involved with the fundraising efforts of Opera Idaho, FUNDSY, The Idaho Food Bank, The Idaho Botanical Garden, The Beaux Arts Wine Auction, Capital Soccer, Boise Philharmonic, Boys and Girls Club, The American Cancer Society, Riverstone International School, The Idaho Human Rights Education Center, the Idaho Black History Museum, Bogus Basin Ski Racing Alliance, Make-A-Wish and others.
Two of Flynn′s fundraising “heroes” are now gone. Flynn worked along side Christopher Reeve for his paralysis foundation as well as Laura Evans, founder of Expedition Inspiration Breast Cancer Research Fund.
